2012 Workshops
Giving and getting feedback on both language and skills tasks is a crucial phase of any language lesson. In Feedback Fiesta we'll look at different ways of ensuring learners are motivated and receive meaningful feedback - through the use of games, planned error correction and the feedback PERM. Come and join us and make your feedback phases a fiesta, not a siesta!

The workshop will be held on:

Friday 10th February at 17.30 GMT

Monday 13th February at 17.30 GMT

To sign up click on the time and date you wish to attend and follow the instructions.

The workshop will be led by Neil McMahon, IHWO Coordinator for Resources and a teacher trainer at IH Buenos Aires Teacher Training.

Tech needed to attend: A reliable internet connection free of background noise and a mic/headphones headset.

Headphones are imperative to avoid feedback for your fellow participants.

Recent Feedback

"Sharing your experiences is always something positive as it often doesn’t happen in the daily work situation, as everybody is just too busy." "I learnt I enjoyed working online, it was the first course I had done like this and it was better than expected"
"I learnt loads – particularly useful were tips on classroom management techniques from other teachers to use with students with special needs (and in fact all students!)"
"I particularly liked input sessions on phonology, vocabulary, discourse analysis and all 4 skills. These sessions were especially informative and accessible and proved to be of immediate use."
"I think it was a very good course, hard work but very useful. I can see it not only in my teaching, but in the comments I make on the lessons I observe and in the lesson planning sessions with inexperienced teachers."
"excellent course notes: succinct, informative, helpful"
"We had great tutors and it was a pleasure to work with them. If I had any questions, our tutors answered them very carefully and in detail."
"I am extremely enthusiastic about this course. I was told that the course was good by a former course participant, but it has surpassed all expectations."
"I just want to say thanks to everyone who took part in creating this course and those involved in doing this particular COLT. I have benefited a lot from it."
"This is a great course that I would recommend to anyone even vaguely intrigued by what online learning is about…or totally adverse to it (I am sure they would change their mind!)"

IH Certificate in Teaching Young Learners:

Course objectives
The main aim of this course is to prepare teachers for working with Young Learners. Usually, these teachers will already have had some form of pre-service training in the teaching of ELT to adults (e.g. IHC / CELTA) but some may not have had previous experience of teaching Young Learners.
Course content
There are 20 sessions to be taken online covering such areas as Child Development, Clarifying and Practising Language, L1 in the classroom, Teaching Very Young Learners, Teaching Adolescents, Material design and selection, etc. Although at this point the course will consist of only 20 sessions, it is hoped that future courses will provide some elements of choice to allow trainees to focus on areas that interest them most
Mode of assessment
Each trainee will submit two different assignments - one on materials and the second a self-reflection task
Trainees will be observed four times, within the twelve-week period, by the local tutor.
Trainees will need to do 6 hours of observation of peers and more experienced colleagues.
Is this course for you?
Trainees tend to be:
An experienced YL teacher who would like further training and an opportunity to reflect on this area
A post-CELTA/IHC teacher who would like to find out more about YL teaching with little or no YL experience
Dates
Please refer to the online calendar for a list of start dates.
Cost
£200 for IH staff
£350 for non-IH staff
Please note that if you are paying as an individual, or via an institution in the UK, 20% VAT will be added to your invoice.
Location
The course is run partly online and requires regular / daily access to the Internet with a good connection. The face-to-face component takes place at an IH school and consists of teaching a minimum of 3 hours during the scheduled 12 weeks, e.g. 4 x 45 minute lessons with two different age groups, as well as 6 hours of observation of peers and more experienced colleagues.
Tutors
There will be two types of tutors. An online tutor (provided by IHWO) who will guide trainees through the online sessions and mark the two assignments and a local tutor (typically an experienced YL expert from the teacher's school) who will observe the trainee teaching and provide feedback on lessons.
Time commitment
Online component:
The course is expected to take 12 weeks. Each week, trainees will be expected to work through 2 sessions, each requiring approximately 2 hours of reading, thinking and doing tasks online. There is no requirement to be online at specific times of the day nor will trainees be expected to do all tasks for one session at the same sitting. Trainees should also allow time for writing two separate assignments.
Face-to-face component:
Each lesson will require a pre-observation meeting with the local tutor to discuss the lesson, 45 minutes of observation and an additional 45 minute meeting for feedback on the lesson. Trainees will need to observe peers and experienced teachers in their school: at least three hours of each, amounting to 6 hours in total.
